Oxytocin Nasal Spray, often called the “love hormone” or “bonding hormone,” provides unique benefits that can help improve mood, emotional well-being, and social interactions.
What is Oxytocin?
Oxytocin is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the body that plays a vital role in social bonding, trust, and mood regulation. It’s released in various situations, such as childbirth, breastfeeding, and moments of closeness, enhancing feelings of connection and warmth.
Benefits of Oxytocin Nasal Spray
- Mood Enhancement: Oxytocin Nasal Spray has been shown to help elevate mood by promoting feelings of relaxation and happiness. Many people find that it helps ease stress and promotes a greater sense of well-being.
- Reduced Anxiety: Studies suggest that oxytocin may reduce symptoms of social and generalized anxiety. For those who feel nervous in social settings or experience persistent anxious thoughts, oxytocin may offer a gentle sense of calm.
- Enhanced Emotional Connections: Known as the “bonding hormone,” oxytocin plays a key role in facilitating trust and social bonding. The nasal spray can help individuals feel more connected in their personal relationships, improving the quality of their social interactions.
- Improved Sleep Quality: Oxytocin may also contribute to better sleep patterns by reducing stress levels and promoting relaxation. Many people report that using oxytocin improves their sleep quality, allowing them to wake up feeling refreshed.
- Pain Relief: Research indicates that oxytocin can have analgesic effects, helping reduce the perception of pain. It may be beneficial for individuals experiencing chronic pain or discomfort.
How Oxytocin Nasal Spray Works
Oxytocin Nasal Spray is quickly absorbed through the nasal passages, allowing the hormone to enter the bloodstream and cross into the brain where it can influence mood and behavior. The spray is convenient, easy to use, and designed to work within minutes, making it ideal for on-the-go use whenever you need a boost in well-being.
Important Safety Information
Compounded oxytocin nasal spray is a prescription medication formulated under physician direction by a licensed compounding pharmacy (Novel Pharmacy, Sylmar, California). Compounded preparations are not FDA-approved as finished products. Oxytocin is FDA-approved only as an injectable (Pitocin®) for use during labor and delivery; intranasal oxytocin is not FDA-approved for any indication. Any use described on this page — including for emotional connection, bonding, mood, anxiety, or libido — is considered off-label and is supported by emerging clinical research rather than FDA evaluation. Patients should weigh this with their physician before starting therapy.
WARNING — Pregnancy and Breastfeeding. Oxytocin is a uterotonic hormone — its injectable form (Pitocin®) is used clinically to induce labor and contract the uterus. Although intranasal dosing is much lower, oxytocin is absorbed systemically and may stimulate uterine contractions. Compounded oxytocin nasal spray must NOT be used by anyone who is pregnant, suspects she may be pregnant, is actively trying to become pregnant, or is breastfeeding. Use during pregnancy may cause miscarriage, premature labor, or fetal harm. Use during breastfeeding may interfere with milk let-down and pass to the infant. Women of childbearing age should use reliable contraception during therapy and notify Dr. Mahjoubi immediately if they become pregnant.
This product is also contraindicated in patients with: known hypersensitivity to oxytocin; a history of cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled hypertension, or recent heart attack; significant electrolyte disorders or hyponatremia (low sodium); active or prior eating-disorder behavior in which water intake is dysregulated; and any condition affecting the nasal passages that would impair absorption or worsen with topical exposure (active sinus infection, recent nasal surgery, severe deviated septum, or chronic epistaxis). Patients on vasoconstrictor medications (including some migraine medications) should not use oxytocin without specific physician approval, because the combination can cause sudden severe hypertension.
Possible side effects include nasal irritation or congestion; headache; flushing; transient changes in blood pressure or heart rate; nausea; uterine cramping in women; and — with high or repeated dosing — hyponatremia (water intoxication) presenting as confusion, severe headache, seizure, or unusual fluid retention. Psychological side effects can include heightened emotional reactivity, irritability, or, paradoxically, increased anxiety in some patients. Discontinue use and contact Dr. Mahjoubi if any side effect is bothersome or persistent. Seek emergency medical care immediately for severe headache, confusion, seizure, chest pain, fainting, allergic reaction, or — in pregnant or possibly pregnant patients — any abdominal cramping, vaginal bleeding, or contractions.
Because compounded oxytocin nasal spray is a prescription medication, it is dispensed only after physician evaluation and only to patients residing in states where Dr. Mahjoubi is currently licensed: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Prescriptions cannot be issued to patients in any other state. This product is intended for adult patients only and should be stored, handled, and used only by the prescribed individual.
Frequently Asked Questions
Below are answers to the most common questions we receive about our compounded oxytocin nasal spray. If you don’t see your question here, message Dr. D directly through your patient portal.
-
Oxytocin is a naturally occurring peptide hormone produced in the hypothalamus and released by the pituitary gland. It plays a central role in social bonding, trust, emotional connection, stress regulation, and intimacy. Our compounded oxytocin nasal spray is designed to deliver oxytocin through the nasal mucosa, where small amounts can be absorbed for short-term effect on mood, social comfort, and emotional openness.
-
Oxytocin nasal spray is prescribed off-label for adults seeking support with stress, social anxiety, emotional connection, intimacy, and mood. It is not intended for use during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children, or in anyone with a known hypersensitivity to oxytocin. A physician consultation through Dr. David Wellness is required before a prescription can be issued, so we can determine whether it’s appropriate for you.
-
Injectable oxytocin (brand name Pitocin) is FDA-approved for labor and lactation support. Intranasal oxytocin is not FDA-approved as a finished pharmaceutical product in the United States. The version we offer is a compounded medication prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacy under a physician prescription. Compounded medications are legal and regulated, but they are not subject to the same FDA pre-market approval process as commercial drugs. Use is considered off-label.
-
Standard directions: prime the bottle before first use, then administer the prescribed number of sprays into one nostril, followed by the same number into the other nostril. Tilt your head slightly forward, breathe gently through the nose during administration, and avoid blowing your nose for at least 10–15 minutes afterward. Your prescription label will list the exact dose and frequency Dr. D has prescribed for you. Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
-
Most patients report subjective effects within 15–45 minutes of administration. The peptide has a short half-life, and effects typically last 1–3 hours. Oxytocin nasal spray is generally used as needed (PRN) for specific situations such as social events, intimate moments, or periods of elevated stress, rather than as a daily standing medication — though some protocols do call for scheduled dosing. Follow the regimen Dr. D prescribes.
-
Patient experiences vary. Common reports include a sense of calm, reduced social anxiety, feeling emotionally “softer” or more open, increased warmth toward others, and a greater capacity for connection. Oxytocin is not a stimulant, sedative, or euphoriant — it does not produce a “high,” and it should not impair your ability to think, work, or drive. If you don’t notice clear effects, that is also common; response varies significantly between individuals.
-
Intranasal oxytocin is generally well-tolerated. Most commonly reported side effects are mild and include nasal irritation, runny nose, mild headache, and transient fatigue. Less commonly reported effects include emotional sensitivity, mild nausea, or changes in appetite. Stop use and contact Dr. D if you experience any unusual or persistent reaction, particularly chest discomfort, significant blood pressure changes, water retention, or mood changes. Seek emergency care for any signs of allergic reaction (swelling, difficulty breathing, hives).
-
Long-term safety data on chronic intranasal oxytocin use is limited, which is one reason most protocols favor as-needed (rather than daily) dosing. Dr. D will work with you on the lowest effective dose and frequency, and will reassess your protocol periodically. Do not increase your dose or frequency without checking in.
-
Oxytocin is not classified as a controlled substance and is not considered addictive in the conventional sense. There is no established withdrawal syndrome. Some patients report diminishing perceived effects with frequent daily use, which is part of why intermittent or as-needed dosing is generally preferred. If you feel your response is changing, message Dr. D before adjusting on your own.
-
Significant drug interactions are uncommon, but caution is warranted with medications affecting blood pressure, diuretics, antidepressants (especially SSRIs), and any medication that affects fluid balance or sodium levels. Always disclose every prescription medication, supplement, and recreational substance you use during your intake — and update us if anything changes. Dr. D will review your medication list before prescribing.
-
No. Oxytocin nasal spray is contraindicated during pregnancy and is not recommended while breastfeeding. If you become pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, stop use and notify Dr. D immediately.
-
Standard employment, athletic, and clinical drug screens do not test for oxytocin. Oxytocin is not on the WADA prohibited list as of current guidance, but if you are a competitive athlete subject to anti-doping rules, verify with your governing body before use.
-
Your prescription is shipped discreetly from our partner compounding pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging. Upon arrival, store the bottle in the refrigerator (do not freeze) and keep it tightly capped when not in use. Allow the spray to come to room temperature for a few minutes before each dose for comfort. Most compounded oxytocin formulations have a beyond-use date of 30–60 days from preparation — do not use past the date printed on your label.
-
After your initial physician consultation and prescription, refills are coordinated through your patient portal. Request your next refill 7–10 days before you run out so we have time to review your progress and avoid any gap in your supply. Periodic check-ins with Dr. D are required to maintain an active prescription.
-
Your monthly membership covers ongoing access to Dr. D as your prescribing physician — including your prescription, clinical oversight, dose adjustments, check-ins, and direct messaging. Because the prescription and the membership are tied together, pausing or canceling the membership also pauses or ends the prescription. If you’d like to discuss changing your protocol or stepping down, message Dr. D and we’ll find a thoughtful path forward together.

No. This is a prescription medication issued specifically to you, based on your medical history and physician evaluation. Sharing prescription medication is illegal and unsafe. If a partner or family member is interested, they’re welcome to schedule their own consultation with Dr. D.
-
If you’re on a scheduled (rather than as-needed) regimen and miss a dose, take it when you remember unless it’s close to your next scheduled dose — in that case, skip the missed dose and resume your normal schedule. Do not double up. If you accidentally take significantly more than prescribed, message Dr. D immediately. For any concerning symptoms after an overdose — confusion, severe headache, water retention, chest discomfort, or seizure — seek emergency medical care.

Commercially manufactured oxytocin (Pitocin) is an injectable formulation used in obstetric settings — it is not designed for intranasal use. Intranasal oxytocin is only available as a compounded prescription in the United States. Quality, concentration, and excipients can vary between compounding pharmacies. Dr. David Wellness partners with a licensed, accredited compounding pharmacy that prepares each prescription specifically for the patient on file.
